Charlotte is one of the 20 largest cities in the US and that makes it an ideal place for universities to advertise their services to a huge base of potential students, but sometimes the advertising encroaches on our campus and insults our student body. One such example of this is the recent expose by News 14 on the UNC Pembroke billboard across from campus. But this isn’t the only example of other universities destroying the visual solidification of our campus community. Winston Salem State had a “WSSU Motorsports” billboard up on the hill that thousands of drivers passed every day as they overlooked the campus throughout most of the Fall ‘07 semester. This is something that students talk to me about all the time. If UNC Charlotte wants to bring the city of Charlotte on board with everything it is doing, we must make University City our own by placing banners on the street and customizing the road signs to display the Charlotte 49ers logo so that everyone knows they are in Niner Nation.

Good call by the Pembroke Chancellor in removing it right away. Its pretty common for a billboard order to call for X number of billboards in a city or a county near certain demographics. The billboard company is probably more at fault. They should have informed Pembroke of this sensitive placement.
