This past Friday, the UTimes hosted the annual debate for the Student Government Presidential Candidates in the SAC. Senator Kyle Kirby and Treasurer Joey Lemons arrived prepared to put on what promised to be a remarkable show. The room was packed with SGA members, members of the UTimes staff, and UNC Charlotte students. Will Grier, the UTimes managing editor, served as the moderator and asked the candidates questions about their platforms and current campus issues. Grier was not the only one asking the questions, however. The audience members also came prepared to ask the candidates questions, ranging from how their administration will approach the UNCC identity crisis, what will they do to prevent alcohol abuse on this campus, and what their administration will do in regards to the current economic crisis and seven percent budget reversion.
The debate was filmed and I’ll be posting that as soon as possible. Overall, the debate was a enormous success and hopefully swayed undecided voters to choose the candidate that best suits their preferences. When asked by SGA Secretary for PR, Raegan Perry, Kyle Kirby said that he is hoping for “a record voting turn out” and that he is “happy to be running against someone like Joey Lemons”. Kirby also remarked that his main goal for his administration, if elected, would be to use the “office of the Student Body President as the chief advocate for the voice of the student body and share and uphold their needs to the administration”. Lemons remarked that the debate ran smoothly and that he feels the viewers “got to see the true personality of the candidates”. Lemons also said that not only his experience but his desire will “keep Charlotte moving forward” and that he “loves this school and cannot wait to serve the Niner Nation as SGA President”. Both candidates have been running exceptional campaigns and will be glad to take a breather once the elections are over.
Voting began Monday March 30th and will run until Wednesday April 1st at noon.
Results will be announced on Tuesday April 2nd in the SGA Complex.
